Technical Progress of Domestic Iron & Steel Industry and Its Influence on the
Development of Refractories

XING Shouwei and LIU Jiehua (3) 3
Abstract:
The quick increase of domestic iron and steel output, the great improvement of steel quality and variety, the importation of advanced equipment and the diminution and elimination of some backward technology and facilities have brought about great influence on the development of refractories. In order to meet the technical progress of iron and steel industry, domestic refractories industry has, in the last decades, concentrated its efforts on the development and production of new Sialon bonded SiC bricks and micropore carbon blocks for giant blast furnaces; new refractories for coke oven and non-coke iron making furnaces; MgO-C bricks for converters and electric conductive refractories for UHP EAF;refractories for slag splashing technology; and the highly technology-intensive refractories for continuous casting facilities. The paper reviews the great change occurred in the industries of iron- and steel-making and refractories during the last decades..

Slag Corrosion Resistance of ¦Â-Sialon-Al2O3 Composites-Part I, Thermodynamics and Mechanism

LI Youfen, HONG Yanruo, ZHONG Xiangchong et al (3) 13
Abstract:
Slag corrosion resistance of ¦ÂSialon and ¦ÂSialon Al2O3 composites has been studied. The effects of FeO content and temperature on corrosion rate have been investigated by means of dip method (static and self rotating). The corrosion process and mechanism are discussed based on thermodynamic and microstructural analysis. It is shown that FeO preferentially attacks ¦Â-Sialon in the composite and the protruded corundum grains would gradually fall off into the slag.

Effect of Additives on Sintering of Cr2O3 in Reductive Atmosphere

LIANG Yonghe, LI Nan, QIAN Xinwei et al (3) 18
Abstract:
The influence of additives TiO2, Y2O3 and composite rare earth on sintering of Cr2O3 in reductive atmosphere was studied. Results show that TiO2 can effectively increase the sintered density at low temperature. As the increase of sintering temperature, such kind of effect becomes more and more unobvious and finally disappear at 1550¡æ. Moreover, Y2O3 and composite rare earth have negative effect on sintering.

Comments on Modification of International Standard---Refractory Bricks---Dimensions

XUE Qiwen and ZHANG Yongfang (3) 21
Abstract:
Comments on modification of International standard ISO 5019/1, 5019/2, 5019/3 relating to the dimensions of rectangular bricks, arch bricks and rectangular checker bricks for regenerative furnaces have been put forward. It is considered that the thickness dimensions of the bricks in these international standards should be revised because they are converted from inch and are not multiples of 5, which brings some problems for bricklaying. The distance between the big end and small end of arch bricks should be paid more attention.

Pattern Recognition of Properties of Alumina-Magnesia Castable and Optimization of its Technological Parameters

LI Yiwei, WANG Xidong, FU Yuankun et al (3) 27
Abstract:
Five factors that influence the properties of castable have been processed with software of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pattern Recognition & Artificial Neural Networks (PRANN) in this paper. These influencing factors were comprehensively analyzed, and technological parameters of casting were optimized.

Improvement of FeO Corrosion Resistance by Addition of ¦Â-Sialon in Matrix of
Corundum Castable

LI Yawei, ZHANG Junlong, LI Youshen et al (3) 31
Abstract:
Silicon aluminum oxynitride (¦ÂSi4Al2O2N6) powder was added into corundum castable and its FeO corrosion resistance was tested in crucible method. It was found that FeO corrosion resistance of sialon containing corundum castables was better than that of no sialon powder added. The optimum content of the sialon powder in castables was higher than mass 15%. Moreover,O'sialon phase, together with ¦Âsialon phase occurred in corundum castables heated in coke bed at 1500¡æ
£¬although ¦Âsialon powder was initially admixed into the matrix of castables. The EPMA results showed these nitrogenª²containing phases located in the matrix of castables were favorable to hinder the penetration of FeO melt at high temperature in comparison with pure corundum castable. However, the flowability of corundum castable became worse originated from the sialon powder added.
